Pokémon Masters EX

Pokémon Masters EX is a free-to-play mobile gacha game developed by DeNA Co., Ltd. and published by The Pokémon Company. It was released worldwide on August 29, 2019, for iOS and Android devices. The game is set on the artificial island of Pasio and features a "3-on-3" real-time battle system where players form teams of "Sync Pairs"—duos consisting of a Pokémon Trainer and their partner Pokémon.

Gameplay

The core gameplay loop revolves around assembling teams of three Sync Pairs to battle against AI opponents or, in limited modes, other players. Battles utilize a real-time action gauge system rather than the traditional turn-based mechanics of the main series. Players spend "move gauge" points to execute attacks, use trainer moves (support skills), or unleash powerful "Sync Moves" once a countdown reaches zero.

Sync Pairs and Gacha System

Sync Pairs are the primary collectible units. They are obtained primarily through a gacha mechanic called "Sync Pair Scout," which requires premium currency (Gems). Sync Pairs are categorized by:

  • Role: Strike (offense), Support (buffs/healing), Tech (status effects/debuffs), Sprint (speed/field effects), and Field (terrain/weather setters).
  • Type: Corresponding to the 18 Pokémon elemental types.
  • Rarity: Ranging from 3★ to 5★ (with 5★ being the highest base rarity).
  • Variants: Standard units, Seasonal alts (holiday/event specific), Sygna Suit (special outfits), and Legendary Adventures (story-focused legendary/mythical Pokémon).

Progression involves leveling up Sync Pairs, increasing their "Move Level" (unlocking stronger moves) via duplicate pulls or specific items, unlocking the "Sync Grid" (a skill tree for passive buffs), and raising "Sync Pair Level" caps through "Champion Stadium" or specific training areas.

Narrative and Setting

The story follows the player character (Scottie or Bettie) and their partner Pikachu as they arrive on Pasio to compete in the Pokémon Masters League (PML). The narrative brings together characters from across the mainline Pokémon game series (Regions Kanto through Paldea), including Gym Leaders, Elite Four members, Champions, Villainous Team leaders, and Professor characters. The story is released in chapters, often accompanied by limited-time events focusing on specific regions or character groups.

Development and Updates

Originally titled Pokémon Masters, the game was rebranded to Pokémon Masters EX on August 27, 2020, coinciding with its first anniversary and a major update (Version 2.0.0). This update introduced the Sync Grid for all units, the Battle Villa (an endurance mode), and a revamped leveling system. Subsequent major updates added:

  • Legendary Arena / Gauntlet: High-difficulty battles against Legendary Pokémon.
  • Champion Stadium: Rotating boss battles against regional Champions.
  • Battle Point (BP) Shop: A shop currency earned through daily/weekly missions.
  • EX Role / EX Style: Upgrades for 5★ pairs granting new passive skills, EX Sync Moves, and visual changes.
  • Tera Types and Terastallization: Added in late 2023 to align with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet mechanics.

Monetization

The game is free-to-play with in-app purchases. Premium currency (Paid Gems) is purchased with real money; free currency (Non-Paid Gems) is earned through gameplay, login bonuses, and mission completion. "Fairy Gems" (monthly subscription) provide daily gems and other perks. The game features "Pity" mechanics (guaranteed 5★ after a set number of pulls) on certain banners, specifically "Poké Fair" and "Master Fair" scouts.

Reception

Upon release, the game received mixed reviews. Critics praised the fanservice, character interactions, visual fidelity, and voice acting, but criticized the initial lack of endgame content, stamina system limitations, and perceived stinginess of free currency. Post-launch updates, particularly the 2.0 "EX" overhaul, generally improved critical and player sentiment regarding content depth and quality-of-life features.

Availability

As of the current date, the game remains active with regular content updates, including new Sync Pairs, story chapters, and events, typically following a monthly schedule.
