Geographic distribution
Fossils are known from western North America, notably the Uinta Basin (Utah), the Powder River Basin (Wyoming and Montana), and sites in Colorado and New Mexico.

Morphology
Poebrotherium was a medium‑sized oreodont, estimated to reach a body length of roughly 1 m and a shoulder height of 60–70 cm. Like other merycoidodontids, it possessed a stocky body, short limbs, and a relatively long tail. The skull was elongated with a short snout; dentition indicates a herbivorous diet, comprising high‑crowned (hypsodont) cheek teeth adapted for grinding vegetation.

Ecology
The dental wear patterns and isotopic evidence suggest Poebrotherium browsed on a mix of low‑lying shrubs and grasses in open to lightly wooded habitats. Limb morphology points to a primarily quadrupedal gait capable of moderate speed, consistent with a foraging lifestyle in the heterogenous environments of the Eocene‑Oligocene transition.

The genus was first described by Othniel Charles Marsh in 1878 based on material recovered from the White River Formation. The name derives from Greek poa “grass” and brotherium (from brother), reflecting its interpretation as a grass‑feeding ungulate.

Paleontological significance
Poebrotherium contributes to understanding the diversification of oreodonts during the Eocene‑Oligocene climatic shift. Its presence in multiple stratigraphic zones provides biostratigraphic utility for correlating North American terrestrial deposits of this interval.
