The species was formally described by the Swiss botanist Augustin Pyramus de Candolle in 1838. The specific epithet canescens is derived from Latin, meaning "becoming grey" or "hoary," which refers to the dense, white-grey hairs found on the plant's foliage.

Physical Description

Podolepis canescens typically grows as an upright annual herb, reaching heights between 10 and 80 centimeters. The stems and leaves are covered in a distinct woolly or "cobwebby" indumentum, giving the plant a silvery or greyish appearance. The leaves are generally linear to lanceolate in shape, measuring 2 to 10 centimeters in length.

The inflorescence consists of yellow daisy-like flower heads, which are usually solitary and positioned at the ends of long stalks. These flower heads are composed of numerous disc florets and ray florets. A defining characteristic of the genus Podolepis present in this species is the presence of several rows of papery, translucent, and often wrinkled involucral bracts that surround the base of the flower head.

Distribution and Habitat

The species is found throughout most mainland Australian states and territories, including Western Australia, South Australia, the Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria. It is highly adaptable and occupies a range of environments, though it is most frequently encountered in arid and semi-arid regions. Common habitats include open woodlands, shrublands, and sandy or loamy plains.

Phenology and Ecology

Flowering typically occurs between August and December, though timing can vary significantly based on seasonal rainfall. Like many members of the Asteraceae family, Podolepis canescens produces small fruits (cypselae) equipped with a pappus of fine bristles, which facilitates seed dispersal by wind. The plant often appears in mass displays following significant winter rains in desert regions.
