Definition
Podkoren is a village in the Municipality of Kranjska Gora, located in the north‑western part of the Upper Carniola (Gorenjska) region of Slovenia.
Overview
Situated at an elevation of approximately 861 m (2 823 ft), Podkoren lies directly beneath the Wurzen Pass (known in Slovene as Koren), making it the first permanent settlement in the Upper Sava Valley. As of the 2002 census, the village had a population of 388 residents. The settlement is positioned near the source of the Sava River at the Zelenci nature reserve and serves as a junction where the road to the Wurzen Pass diverges from an extension of the A2 motorway that connects the Ljubljana Basin with the Italian border. Historically a toll station on the route between the Littoral towns of Trieste and Gorizia and Villach in Carinthia, Podkoren today relies heavily on tourism, particularly winter sports; several ski pistes descend from the Karawanks mountains above the village.
Etymology / Origin
The Slovene name Podkoren combines the preposition pod (“below”) with Koren, the Slovene designation of the nearby mountain pass. Consequently, the name literally means “below Koren”. The German exonym for the settlement is Wurzen.
Characteristics
- Geography: Podkoren is positioned in the Upper Sava Valley at the foot of the Karawanks range. The Zelenci marsh, the protected source of the Sava River, lies a short distance to the west.
- Transport: Modern access is provided by the A2 motorway and the Karawanks Tunnel, which carry traffic between Slovenia and Austria. Historically the village was served by the Tarvisio–Ljubljana Railway (operational 1870–1969).
- Architecture & Landmarks: The village church, dedicated to Saint Andrew, dates from the late Gothic period but was later refurbished in Baroque style. Traditional Alpine houses, many of which retain Gothic structural elements, are characteristic of the settlement. A plaque commemorates the visits of the British chemist Humphry Davy, who stayed in Podkoren during his travels in the Upper Sava Valley.
- Economy: While dairy farming has declined, tourism—especially skiing on the slopes of the Karawanks—constitutes the main economic activity. The area hosts ski lifts and a World Cup ski course.
- Demographics: The most recent reliable population figure (2002) records 388 inhabitants; later official counts are not yet available in public sources.
