The village was first mentioned in written records in 1250. Until 1949 it was known as Frejštejn (Czech) or Freistein (German). The name today reflects its position “below the castle” (Podhradí) and “above the Dyje” (nad Dyjí). The prominent landmark is the ruin of Frejštejn Castle, which dominates the local landscape and serves as a starting point for hiking in the surrounding Podyjí Protected Landscape Area.
Etymology / Origin
- Podhradí: Czech for “the area below a castle,” indicating the settlement’s location at the foot of the historic Frejštejn Castle.
- nad Dyjí: Czech phrase meaning “above the Dyje (Thaya) River,” denoting its position on the river’s right bank.
The former Czech name Frejštejn and German Freistein were used until the post‑World‑War II renaming in 1949.
