Ecology and Behavior

Reproduction
- Breeding: Occurs in the spring or early summer, varying by species and latitude. Mating involves a courtship “tail-straddling walk,” after which the male deposits a spermatophore that the female picks up with her cloaca.
- Development: Plethodon species exhibit direct development; embryos develop fully within the egg and hatch as miniature adults, bypassing an aquatic larval stage. Egg clutches are typically laid in moist terrestrial sites such as under logs or within crevices.
Conservation Status
The conservation status of Plethodon species varies. While many species are classified as Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), several have restricted ranges and are threatened by habitat loss, climate change, and forest fragmentation. Notable at-risk species include Plethodon shenandoah (Shenandoah salamander) and Plethodon albagula (Northern slimy salamander), both listed as Near Threatened or Vulnerable.

Plethodon salamanders are frequently used in ecological and evolutionary studies due to their lungless physiology, direct development, and sensitivity to environmental changes.
