PlayStation VR Worlds

PlayStation VR Worlds is a 2016 video game compilation developed by London Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. It was released on 13 October 2016 in Japan, and 10 October 2016 in North America and Europe, as a launch title for the PlayStation VR virtual reality headset.

Overview

The game is a collection of five distinct virtual reality experiences spanning multiple genres, each built from the ground up exclusively for PlayStation VR. Players select experiences through a central hub world.

Included Experiences

  • Danger Ball – A futuristic sports game in which the player uses their head to hit a ball against a wall or opponent. It includes three modes: Score Attack (bouncing the ball onto scoring tiles), Tournament (facing six AI opponents with special moves), and Quickplay (single matches against chosen opponents).

  • London Heist – A first-person shooter in which the player controls a mobster tasked with stealing a diamond. It features a Story mode and Mickey's Shooting Range (a target practice mode). This is the only experience that supports PlayStation Move motion controllers.

  • Ocean Descent – A simulation experience in which the player descends into the ocean to observe marine wildlife. Three dive variations are available, one of which includes a shark attack sequence.

  • Scavenger's Odyssey – An action game set in outer space where the player controls an alien operating a vehicle. The objective is to travel across celestial bodies and defeat enemies using the vehicle's scavenger beam and pulse cannons.

  • VR Luge – A racing game in which the player character leans on a street luge sled and slides down a highway while dodging vehicles. It includes VR Luge Tour (racing through four tracks within a time limit) and Time Trial (completing a single track as fast as possible).

Development

The game was developed by London Studio and officially revealed on 15 March 2016. Prior to announcement, Ocean Descent (originally titled Into the Deep), London Heist, and VR Luge existed as tech demos for the PlayStation VR. The game's composer, Joe Thwaites, described VR Worlds as one of the most challenging projects he had worked on, citing the need to make each experience sound unique while maintaining overall cohesion.

Reception

Upon release, PlayStation VR Worlds received mixed reviews according to Metacritic. Critics widely praised London Heist for its immersive use of the PlayStation Move controller and its sense of violent realism enabled by VR. Ocean Descent was noted as visually impressive but largely passive. Scavenger's Odyssey was frequently criticized for inducing motion sickness. The compilation was also criticized for its lack of replayability and its high launch price, with Destructoid's Chris Carter referring to it as a "paid demo."

Legacy

Many gameplay concepts introduced in London Heist were later expanded into a full-length game, Blood & Truth, released on 28 May 2019, also developed by London Studio. Additionally, a reference to Ocean Descent appears in Astro's Playroom (2020), where a Bot is shown inside a submerged cage wearing a PlayStation VR headset.
