Platypezina is a genus of flat-footed flies in the family Platypezidae (order Diptera). The genus was established by Swedish entomologist Einar Wahlgren in 1910.
Taxonomy
Platypezina belongs to the subfamily Callomyiinae within the family Platypezidae. Synonyms for the genus include Coccothrinax (Enderlein, 1927) and Thrinacola (Enderlein, 1927).
Species
The genus contains two recognized species:
- Platypezina connexa (Boheman, 1858) — Found in Europe
- Platypezina diversa (Johnson, 1923) — Found in eastern North America
Description
Members of this genus are small, slender-bodied flies with delicate proportions. They are characterized by a high and strongly arched thorax, a prominent wing stigma, and a forked fourth longitudinal vein that branches near the posterior crossvein.
Distribution
The genus has a Holarctic distribution, with one species occurring in Europe (P. connexa) and one in North America (P. diversa).
