Piz Fora

Piz Fora is a prominent mountain located in the [[Bernina Range]] of the [[Alps]], situated in the canton of [[Graubünden]], [[Switzerland]]. With an elevation of 3,363 meters (11,033 feet) above sea level, it is a significant peak within the eastern portion of the range.

Geography and Location: Piz Fora lies to the north of the main Bernina crest, overlooking the Val Roseg to the west and the Morteratsch Glacier basin to the north. Its immediate neighbors include [[Piz Prievlus]] to the north and the expansive [[Piz Bernina]] massif further south. The mountain is characterized by its glaciated flanks and rocky summit, typical of the high Alpine environment. It is part of the extensive protected natural landscape of the [[Swiss National Park]] buffer zone and the surrounding Engadine Valley.

Mountaineering: Piz Fora is a popular objective for experienced mountaineers, offering various routes of ascent. The most common approaches involve traversing glaciers, often starting from the [[Diavolezza]] cable car station or the [[Boval Hut]]. The normal route typically involves crossing parts of the Vadret da Morteratsch (Morteratsch Glacier) and navigating snow and ice fields to reach the summit. While not as technically challenging as some of its higher Bernina neighbors, it requires glacier travel skills, appropriate equipment, and good weather conditions. It is frequently climbed in conjunction with other peaks in the area or as part of a longer ski tour in winter and spring.

Etymology: The name "Piz" is a [[Romansh language]] term meaning "peak" or "summit," common for mountains in this region of Switzerland. "Fora" translates to "outside" or "beyond," possibly referring to its position relative to other peaks or valleys, or its location "outside" the main Bernina chain.
