Pitcairnia elliptica is a species of plant in the family Bromeliaceae. It was described by Carl Christian Mez and Luis Sodiro.
Taxonomy and Nomenclature The species was scientifically described by German botanist Carl Christian Mez and Ecuadorian botanist Luis Sodiro. Its binomial name is Pitcairnia elliptica Mez & Sodiro. The genus name Pitcairnia honors William Pitcairn (1711–1791), a Scottish physician and gardener.
Distribution and Habitat Pitcairnia elliptica is endemic to Ecuador, meaning it is found nowhere else in the world. Its natural habitats include subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests and subtropical or tropical moist montane forests.
Conservation Status The species is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (IUCN 3.1). It is considered threatened by habitat loss.
