Piraquara River

The Piraquara River is a significant watercourse located in the state of Paraná, Brazil. It is a vital tributary of the Iguaçu River, which itself is part of the Paraná River basin. The river is particularly renowned for its role in the water supply system for the Curitiba metropolitan area, one of the largest urban agglomerations in southern Brazil.

Geography and Course The Piraquara River originates in the Serra do Mar mountain range, specifically in the eastern plateau of Paraná. It flows primarily in a generally southwestward direction, traversing through a landscape characterized by remnants of the Atlantic Forest biome. Its course is largely contained within the municipality of Piraquara, from which it derives its name, and also touches upon other municipalities in the region. The river eventually empties into the Iguaçu River.

Hydrology and Water Supply The Piraquara River is a crucial source of potable water for the capital city of Curitiba and its surrounding metropolitan region. To meet the high demand, two major dams have been constructed along its course:

  • Barragem do Piraquara I (Piraquara I Dam): Located upstream, this dam creates a reservoir that serves as a primary source for water treatment plants.
  • Barragem do Piraquara II (Piraquara II Dam): Situated downstream from the first, this dam further augments the water storage capacity, ensuring a more robust and reliable supply to the densely populated urban areas. The management of these reservoirs is overseen by SANEPAR (Companhia de Saneamento do Paraná), Paraná's state-owned water and sanitation company.

Environmental Protection Due to its importance as a water source and its ecological significance, the Piraquara River basin is subject to various environmental protection measures. A significant portion of its basin is included within an Environmental Protection Area (APA - Área de Proteção Ambiental), specifically the APA do Piraquara. This designation aims to protect water quality, conserve biodiversity (including remnants of the Atlantic Forest), and regulate land use to prevent pollution and degradation of the ecosystem. The protection efforts focus on maintaining forest cover, controlling urban expansion, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices within the watershed.

Significance The Piraquara River holds immense importance for both ecological conservation and human well-being in the state of Paraná. It exemplifies the critical balance between natural resource preservation and the demands of urban development, serving as a case study for integrated water resource management in a rapidly growing region.
