Geography
Pinheiro Machado lies in the eastern part of the state, within the microregion of Pelotas. The terrain is predominantly low‑lying grassland (pampa) with a subtropical climate, characterized by warm summers and mild winters. The municipality is traversed by several minor waterways that are tributaries of the larger Lagoa dos Patos basin.

History
The settlement that would become Pinheiro Machado originated in the early 20th century, developing around agricultural activities and livestock farming. The municipality was officially created in 1905, after being separated from the neighboring municipality of Canguçu. Its name honors Armando de Pinheiro Machado (1851–1915), a prominent Brazilian politician who served as a senator for Rio Grande do Sul and held various governmental positions during the early years of the Brazilian Republic.

Economy
The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, with a focus on rice, soybeans, corn, and livestock (especially cattle and sheep). Small‑scale commerce and services provide additional employment within the urban centre. The municipality also partakes in regional initiatives aimed at sustainable development of the pampa ecosystem.

Infrastructure and Services
Pinheiro Machado is connected to the state’s road network via the BR‑116 highway, which provides access to larger urban centres such as Pelotas and Porto Alegre. Public education is offered through municipal schools covering primary and secondary levels, while health services are delivered by a municipal health department and a basic health clinic.

Demographics
The population is predominantly of European descent, reflecting the historic immigration patterns of southern Brazil, with considerable ancestry from Portuguese, Italian, and German settlers. Portuguese is the official language; the local dialect exhibits characteristics typical of the Rio Grande do Sul gaúcho cultural region.

Culture
Cultural life in Pinheiro Machado is closely linked to the traditions of the southern Brazilian pampas, including folk music (chamamé and milonga), traditional dance (milonga), and festivals celebrating rural life and regional cuisine.
