Pine Cobble Mountain

Pine Cobble Mountain is a peak located in the Taconic Mountains within the town of Williamstown, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. Reaching an elevation of approximately 1,894 feet (577 meters) above sea level, the mountain is a prominent geographical feature in the northern Berkshire region.

Geologically, Pine Cobble Mountain is characterized by extensive quartzite outcrops. These rocky features are part of the Cheshire Quartzite formation, which is resistant to erosion and contributes to the rugged terrain of the area. The summit area is known for its "cobbles"—exposed rock formations—and a forest composition that includes various pine species and northern hardwoods.

The mountain serves as a significant site for regional recreation. The Pine Cobble Trail is a well-established hiking route that ascends the mountain, providing views of the Hoosic River valley, the town of Williamstown, and the nearby Mount Greylock range. At the ridge, the trail connects with the Appalachian Trail near the Vermont-Massachusetts border, making it a critical access point for the National Scenic Trail system.

Much of the land on and around Pine Cobble Mountain is protected through conservation efforts. Management of the trails and surrounding forest is handled by a combination of entities, including the Williamstown Rural Lands Foundation and Williams College, to maintain the ecological integrity and public accessibility of the site.
