Pierre Rebut (1794 – 1872) was a French horticulturist and botanist noted for his work with cacti. Born in Lyon, France, Rebut devoted much of his career to the cultivation, collection, and description of cactus species, contributing to the growing interest in succulents during the 19th century.
Rebut was an active member of the Société Botanique de France and corresponded with other European botanists and plant collectors, exchanging specimens and knowledge. His expertise in greenhouse cultivation techniques helped popularize a variety of cacti in European horticultural circles.
In recognition of his contributions, the cactus genus Rebutia (family Cactaceae) was named in his honor. The genus was formally described by German botanist Karl Moritz Schumann in 1903, acknowledging Rebut’s influence on cactus taxonomy and cultivation.
Rebut’s legacy persists primarily through the continued use of his name in botanical nomenclature and the historical records of 19th‑century horticulture.
