Pierre Pujo

Definition
Pierre Pujo (1929 – 2007) was a French political activist and journalist who served as the leader of the monarchist and nationalist movement Action Française during the latter half of the 20th century.

Overview
Born in 1929, Pierre Pujo was the son of Maurice Pujo, one of the founding members of Action Française, a right‑wing royalist organization established in the early 20th century. After World War II, the movement was revived, and Pujo assumed its leadership in the early 1960s, holding the title of President of the Action Française and overseeing its publications, notably the daily newspaper L'Action Française. Under his direction the organization continued to advocate for the restoration of the French monarchy, the preservation of traditional Catholic values, and a nationalist vision of French identity. Pujo remained at the helm of the movement until his death on 25 July 2007.

Etymology/Origin
The given name Pierre is the French equivalent of “Peter,” derived from the Greek Petros meaning “rock.” The surname Pujo is of French origin; it is relatively rare and has been recorded primarily in western France, especially in the Loire‑Atlantique and Pays de la Loire regions.

Characteristics

  • Leadership of Action Française: Pujo reorganized the movement’s structure, emphasized intellectual outreach, and maintained close ties with the legacy of Charles Maurras, the movement’s principal theorist.
  • Journalistic Activity: As director of L'Action Française, he oversaw the newspaper’s editorial line, which combined cultural commentary with political advocacy.
  • Ideological Stance: Pujo’s positions were characterized by monarchism, anti‑republicanism, strong Catholic conservatism, and opposition to both liberal democracy and Marxist ideologies.
  • Public Presence: He participated in a limited number of public events and contributed articles to various right‑wing publications, but generally avoided mainstream media exposure.
