Pierre Audi (born September 1957 in Beirut, Lebanon) is a highly acclaimed British-Lebanese opera and theatre director and artistic director, known for his innovative and often challenging productions of both classical and contemporary works. He has held prominent leadership positions at major European opera houses and festivals, significantly influencing the landscape of contemporary opera.
Early Life and Education: Audi was born into a prominent Lebanese family; his father was the banker Raymond Audi. He moved to England at a young age and received his education there. He studied history at Oxford University before embarking on a career in theatre.
Career: Audi's career began in London, where he founded the London International Festival of Theatre (LIFT) in 1981, serving as its director until 1988. LIFT quickly established itself as a significant platform for international theatre and performance.
In 1988, Audi was appointed Artistic Director of De Nationale Opera (Dutch National Opera, DNO) in Amsterdam, a position he held for an remarkable three decades until 2018. In 2022, Pierre Audi was appointed Intendant (General Director) of the Theater an der Wien in Vienna, Austria, taking over the artistic and general management of the renowned opera house.
