Definition Piešťany District is an administrative district (okres) in the Trnava Region of western Slovakia. It is one of the nine districts in the region and functions as a local government unit responsible for regional administration, public services, and coordination of certain state functions.
Overview Located in the western part of Slovakia, Piešťany District borders the districts of Hlohovec to the north, Topoľčany (in the Nitriansky Region) to the east, Partizánske (Nitriansky Region) to the southeast, and Trnava District to the west. The district is centered on the town of Piešťany, which serves as its administrative seat and largest urban center. The area is known for its spa industry, particularly due to the internationally recognized Piešťany Spa, which has been a prominent destination for medical and wellness tourism for over a century.
The district covers a total area of approximately 336 km² and had a population of around 51,000 as of the 2021 census. It comprises 25 municipalities, including towns and villages situated in a predominantly flat to gently undulating landscape along the Váh River.
Etymology/Origin The district derives its name from the town of Piešťany, which in turn originates from the Slovak word "piesok," meaning "sand." This likely refers to the sandy soil found along the banks of the Váh River in the area. The name has historical roots in Hungarian as "Pozsonyalmás," reflecting the region's complex linguistic and historical background during the Austro-Hungarian Empire era.
Characteristics Piešťany District is distinguished by its economic focus on healthcare and tourism, particularly thermal and rehabilitation spas. The Piešťany Spa specializes in treating musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiovascular conditions. The district also features agricultural activity and light industry. Transportation infrastructure includes road and rail connections, primarily along the Váh River corridor. The district belongs to the broader cultural and economic sphere of western Slovakia and maintains close links with the regional capital, Trnava, and the national capital, Bratislava.
