Pholiotina

Pholiotina is a genus of agaric fungi in the family Bolbitiaceae. Species within this genus are characterized by small to medium‑sized fruiting bodies with thin, fragile caps, typically brownish to ochre in color, and free or narrowly attached gills. The spores are smooth, ellipsoid to somewhat lemon‑shaped (lemoniform), and usually brown to reddish‑brown when deposited.

  • Cap (pileus): Convex to plano-convex, often hygrophanous, ranging from 0.5 to 3 cm in diameter. Surface may be smooth or slightly fibrillose.
  • Gills (lamellae): Free to slightly attached, white to grayish, becoming brownish as spores mature.
  • Stipe (stem): Slender, typically 2–7 cm long, often with a membranous partial veil that may leave a faint annular zone.
  • Spores: 5–9 µm long, ellipsoid to lemon‑shaped, smooth, brownish in deposit.
  • Microscopic features: Basidia are usually four‑spored; cystidia may be present but are not diagnostic for the genus.

Habitat and Distribution

Pholiotina species are saprotrophic, growing on a variety of substrates including disturbed soils, grasslands, dung, and decaying plant material. They are cosmopolitan, occurring in temperate and subtropical regions of North America, Europe, Asia, and Australasia. Many species fruit in the spring and autumn, often after periods of rain.

  • Pholiotina cyanopus: Found in grasslands and pastures; known for its small size and brownish caps.
  • Pholiotina rugosa: Frequently occurring on mossy soils; has a distinctive wrinkled cap surface.
  • Pholiotina spadicea: Common in Europe; recognized by its chestnut‑brown coloration.
  • Pholiotina aeruginosa: A psychoactive species containing psilocybin and psilocin; occurs on dung and grassland soils in Europe and North America.

Toxicology

Several Pholiotina species contain the hallucinogenic indole alkaloids psilocybin and psilocin, notably P. aeruginosa and P. cyanopus. These compounds are pharmacologically active and can produce psychoactive effects when ingested. Conversely, other species lack these compounds and are considered non‑psychoactive. There are no well‑documented cases of severe toxicity or lethal poisoning directly attributed to Pholiotina species, but accidental ingestion of misidentified mushrooms can pose health risks.

Conservation

Most Pholiotina species are not currently listed as threatened, owing to their widespread and opportunistic nature. However, habitat loss and changes in land use can affect local populations, particularly those restricted to specialized substrates such as dung.

Research Significance

The genus is of interest in mycological studies for its phylogenetic position within Bolbitiaceae and for the presence of psychoactive compounds in several species. Ongoing molecular work aims to resolve taxonomic ambiguities and clarify species boundaries within the group.
