Philippe Viard

Philippe Viard (22 November 1809 – 9 February 1872) was a French Roman Catholic clergyman who served as the first Bishop of Wellington, New Zealand. He played a pivotal role in establishing the Catholic Church’s presence in the country during the mid‑19th century.

Early life and education
Viard was born in Dury, near Saint‑Malo in the département of Ille‑et‑Vilaine, France. He entered the seminary at Rennes and was ordained to the priesthood on 13 May 1833. Following ordination, he served in various capacities within the Diocese of Rennes, including pastoral work and teaching.

Mission to New Zealand
In 1838, Viard joined a group of French missionaries sent by Bishop Pierre‑Paul de Léon to the Pacific. He arrived in New Zealand in 1839, initially working among Māori communities in the Hokianga region. He later moved to the Wellington area, where he began establishing Catholic missions and schools.

Episcopal appointment
On 20 June 1848, Pope Pius IX appointed Viard as Vicar Apostolic of the newly created Vicariate Apostolic of Wellington and as Titular Bishop of Samosata. He was consecrated a bishop on 10 December 1849 at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Auckland, by Bishop John P. P. McNally. Upon the elevation of the vicariate to a diocese on 1 May 1869, Viard became the first Bishop of Wellington.

Contributions and legacy
During his episcopacy, Viard oversaw the construction of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Wellington, the establishment of numerous parishes, and the foundation of Catholic education institutions. He was noted for his efforts to engage both European settlers and Māori converts, promoting bilingual liturgy and cultural sensitivity. Viard’s tenure contributed significantly to the growth of Catholicism in New Zealand, laying foundations that persisted beyond his death.

Death
Bishop Philippe Viard died on 9 February 1872 in Wellington. He was interred in the cathedral crypt of St. Mary’s. His successor, Bishop Francis M. Murray, continued the development of the diocese.
