Philippe Paul

Philippe Paul (born May 22, 1960) is a French politician who served as a Senator for the Finistère department from October 1, 2008, to October 1, 2020. A member of The Republicans (Les Républicains, formerly the Union for a Popular Movement, UMP), he is known for his long tenure in local and national politics.

Early Life and Education Born in Douarnenez, Finistère, Paul pursued a career in local administration before entering national politics.

Political Career

  • Mayor of Douarnenez: Philippe Paul served as the Mayor of Douarnenez, a commune in Brittany, from March 2001 until July 2017. During his time as mayor, he focused on local development, economic revitalization, and cultural initiatives for the port town.
  • Senator for Finistère: He was elected to the French Senate on September 21, 2008, representing the department of Finistère. He was re-elected in 2014. In the Senate, Paul was a prominent member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and the Armed Forces, where he contributed to discussions and reports on national security, international relations, and defense policy. His mandate concluded in 2020, as he chose not to seek re-election.
  • Political Affiliation: Throughout his career, Philippe Paul has been affiliated with the mainstream right-wing parties in France, initially the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) and subsequently its successor, The Republicans (Les Républicains).
