Philip Spratley

Philip Spratley (27 March 1937 – 10 October 2021) was an English professional footballer who played as a winger, primarily on the right wing. He is best known for his time at Nottingham Forest, Notts County, and Mansfield Town during the 1950s and 1960s.

Early Life and Career

Born in Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, Spratley began his football career with his local club, signing for Nottingham Forest in 1954. He quickly progressed through the youth ranks, showing promise as a speedy and skillful winger.

Professional Career

Nottingham Forest

Spratley made his senior debut for Nottingham Forest, a First Division club at the time, in 1955. He spent six years with the club, making 34 league appearances and scoring 6 goals. Although he was part of the squad that famously won the FA Cup in 1959, he did not feature in the final match. His time at Forest was marked by strong competition for places in the attack.

Notts County

In 1960, Spratley moved to Forest's local rivals, Notts County, then in the Fourth Division. It was at Notts County where he enjoyed a more regular first-team role, playing 73 league games over two seasons and scoring 13 goals. He was a key player for the "Magpies" during this period.

Mansfield Town

Spratley's career then took him to Mansfield Town in 1962. He continued to be a regular starter, contributing 6 goals in 50 league appearances for the "Stags" over two years.

Later Career

After leaving Mansfield Town, Spratley had spells with Wrexham (1964–1965) and Bradford Park Avenue (1965–1966) before moving into non-league football. He played for clubs such as Ilkeston Town and Worksop Town, continuing to showcase his abilities at a semi-professional level before retiring from the game.

Death

Philip Spratley passed away on 10 October 2021, at the age of 84.
