Philaenus spumarius, commonly known as the meadow spittlebug, is a species of true bug in the family Aphrophoridae. It is one of the most widely distributed spittlebugs and is found throughout temperate regions of Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of North America and Oceania where it has been introduced.

The species was first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 as Cicada spumaria and later placed in the genus Philaenus.
Morphology

- Nymphs: Known for producing frothy “spittle” masses on host plants, which serve as protection from predators and desiccation. Nymphal coloration ranges from pale yellow to brown, matching the surrounding foam.
Distribution and Habitat
P. spumarius occupies a broad range of habitats, including grasslands, meadows, agricultural fields, gardens, and forest edges. It is especially prevalent in moist environments where host plants are abundant.
Life Cycle
- Eggs: Laid in rows on the stems of host plants in late summer; overwinter in the egg stage.
- Nymphs: Hatch in spring; pass through five instars, each protected by a foam nest.
- Adults: Emerge in late spring to early summer, feed on plant sap, and reproduce. One to two generations may occur per year depending on climate.
