Definition
Phil Hawthorne (21 October 1943 – 25 May 2022) was an Australian sportsman who played both rugby union and rugby league at the international and professional levels, representing the Australian national rugby union team (the Wallabies) and later competing in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) premiership.
Overview
Born in Sydney, New South Wales, Hawthorne attended Sydney Boys High School, where he first distinguished himself as a rugby union player. He played club rugby for the Sydney University Football Club and earned selection for New South Wales. In 1965, Hawthorne made his debut for the Wallabies as a full‑back, earning a total of six caps for Australia, including participation in the 1966 Australia tour of Europe.
In 1967 Hawthorne switched codes to rugby league, signing with the Penrith Panthers (then in the NSWRL). He later played for the Eastern Suburbs Roosters (now the Sydney Roosters). Over his league career he made 35 first‑grade appearances and was noted for his reliable goal‑kicking. After retiring from playing, Hawthorne remained involved in rugby through coaching and mentorship roles. He passed away on 25 May 2022 at the age of 78.
