Definition
Phil Harvey (born 1950) is an American social entrepreneur, philanthropist, and activist known for his work in family planning, reproductive health, and population research. He is the co‑founder of Population Services International (PSI) and the founder of the Center for Family Planning Program Development (CFPPD).
Overview
Harvey began his career in the early 1970s, focusing on increasing access to contraceptives and reproductive health services in developing countries. In 1977, he co‑founded PSI, a global nonprofit organization that implements health interventions—including family planning, HIV/AIDS prevention, and child survival programs—in over 50 countries. Through PSI, Harvey helped develop large‑scale social marketing campaigns that distributed affordable contraceptives and health products to underserved populations.
In 1990, Harvey established the Center for Family Planning Program Development, a nonprofit dedicated to research, advocacy, and training in family planning. He has also served on the boards of several related organizations, including the International Planned Parenthood Federation and the Population Council.
Harvey is the author of numerous articles and reports on reproductive health policy and has testified before U.S. congressional committees on issues related to population growth and family planning funding. He has received several honors for his contributions, including recognition from the United Nations Population Fund.
