Phialisphaera is a genus of fungi classified within the phylum Ascomycota. Its taxonomic placement is uncertain (incertae sedis), meaning it has not been assigned with certainty to any class, order, or family within the Ascomycota.
Taxonomy and Nomenclature
The genus was originally described by the Belgian botanist Barthélemy Charles Joseph Dumortier in 1822, in his work Commentationes botanicae (Tournay), page 88. The Index Fungorum registration identifier for the genus is 3988.
Some taxonomic databases, including the Interim Register of Marine and Nonmarine Genera (IRMNG) and the Taxonomicon, list Phialisphaera as a nomen dubium (a name of doubtful identity). The genus is placed within the subphylum Pezizomycotina, but its relationships to other taxa remain unresolved.
Species
The species Phialisphaera turgida (Pers.) Dumort. is considered a synonym of Anthostoma turgidum (Pers.) Nitschke, a fungus in the family Diatrypaceae (order Xylariales). Similarly, Phialisphaera faginea (Pers.) Dumort. is also listed as a synonym of Anthostoma turgidum.
