Phan Thiết

Phan Thiết is a coastal city and the capital of Bình Thuận Province in the South Central Coast region of Vietnam. Situated on the southeastern shoreline of the South China Sea, it lies approximately 200 km east of Ho Chi Minh City and 350 km north of Nha Trang. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of roughly 210,000 inhabitants and covered an area of about 50 km².

Geography and Climate
Phan Thiết occupies a low‑lying coastal plain bordered by the Truong Sa River to the north and the Cà Mau River to the south. The surrounding region features sandy beaches, dunes, and a series of limestone hills. The city experiences a tropical monsoon climate, characterized by a wet season from May to November and a dry season from December to April, with average annual temperatures ranging between 24 °C and 30 °C.

History
The area that is now Phan Thiết was originally inhabited by the Cham people before becoming part of the Vietnamese kingdom in the 15th century. During the French colonial period, Phan Thiết served as a modest fishing port and later expanded as a provincial capital after Vietnam’s independence. The city witnessed combat during the Vietnam War, chiefly as a logistical base for the South Vietnamese forces.

Economy
The local economy is diversified, with tourism, fisheries, and agriculture as the principal sectors.

Tourism – Phan Thiết is best known internationally for the adjacent resort area of Mũi Né (Mui Ne), famed for its extensive sand dunes, kite‑surfing conditions, and beachfront hotels. The city itself hosts a waterfront promenade, seafood markets, and cultural sites that attract domestic visitors.

Fisheries – The port facilities support a commercial fishing fleet that harvests species such as squid, shrimp, and various demersal fish. Processed seafood products are exported to domestic and regional markets.

Agriculture – The hinterland of Phan Thiết cultivates water‑melon, dragon fruit, and other tropical fruits, benefiting from the region’s warm climate and irrigation from the Truong Sa River.

Transportation
Phan Thiết is connected to the national road network by National Highway 1A, which runs along Vietnam’s eastern seaboard. The city is served by Phan Thiết Airport, a domestic airport handling flights mainly to Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang. A railway line of the North–South Railway passes through the city, providing passenger and freight services.

Education and Culture
The city hosts several institutions of higher education, including Bình Thuận University, which offers programs in marine sciences, tourism, and engineering. Annual cultural events feature traditional music, dance, and the “Hoi Nghich” (festival of the sea), reflecting the community’s maritime heritage.

Administrative Divisions
Phan Thiết is administratively divided into several wards (phường) and communes (xã), with the central ward of Phú Thuận serving as the municipal government seat.
