Definition
Phước Sơn district is a rural administrative division (huyện) of Quảng Nam province in the South Central Coast region of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
Overview
- Location: Situated in the north‑western part of Quảng Nam province, Phước Sơn borders the provinces of Quảng Ngãi to the east, Kon Tum to the west, and the Vietnamese Central Highlands.
- Area: The district covers approximately 1,040 km², making it one of the larger districts in the province.
- Population: According to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam, the district had an estimated population of about 50 000 inhabitants in 2019, comprising a mix of ethnic Vietnamese (Kinh) and minority groups such as the H’rê, Ma Lê and others.
- Administrative centre: The district capital is the township of Phước Vân.
- Geography: Phước Sơn is predominantly mountainous, lying within the Annamite (Truong Son) Range. The terrain is characterised by steep slopes, forested valleys and a network of small rivers that feed into the larger Thu Bồn basin.
- Economy: The local economy is largely based on agriculture (including rice, corn and cassava cultivation on terraced fields), forestry, and limited small‑scale mining. In recent years, government programmes have promoted eco‑tourism and the development of infrastructure in the district.
- Transport: Road access is provided mainly by provincial highways that connect Phước Sơn with the provincial capital, Đà Nẵng, and neighbouring districts. The mountainous terrain restricts the development of major rail or air links.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Phước Sơn” combines two Sino‑Vietnamese elements: “Phước” (福) meaning “blessing” or “good fortune,” and “Sơn” (山) meaning “mountain.” The designation likely reflects the district’s mountainous landscape and the positive connotation traditionally associated with the term “phước.” No specific historical documentation confirming the exact origin of the name has been identified; thus, this interpretation is based on linguistic analysis.
Characteristics
- Topography & Environment: The district’s high elevation results in a subtropical climate with cooler temperatures relative to the lowland coastal areas of Quảng Nam. The region retains significant forest cover, supporting biodiversity that includes several endemic plant and animal species.
- Demographics: Ethnic minority communities maintain distinct cultural traditions, languages and festivals, contributing to the district’s cultural diversity.
- Infrastructure: Public services such as education and healthcare are concentrated in Phước Vân township, with satellite facilities spread across the district’s communes. Development initiatives have focused on improving road quality, water supply, and electricity access.
- Cultural & Historical Sites: While the district does not contain major national monuments, it possesses several local temples and war memorials associated with the Vietnam War era, reflecting its historical experiences.
