Peverett is an English surname, most notably associated with David Jack "Lonesome Dave" Peverett (16 April 1943 – 7 February 2000), the English singer, guitarist, and original lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the rock band Foghat.
Dave Peverett was born in Dulwich, London, England. He began his musical career in the early 1960s as vocalist and lead guitarist of the Nocturnes. He later joined the blues-rock band Savoy Brown as a rhythm guitarist, eventually becoming its lead singer and recording five albums with the group.
In 1971, Peverett left Savoy Brown along with drummer Roger Earl and bassist Tony Stevens, and with the addition of lead guitarist Rod Price, formed the band Foghat. The band's name was a nonsense word Peverett had invented as a child while playing Scrabble with his brother. Foghat became known for their blues-rock and boogie-rock sound, achieving significant commercial success in the 1970s with hits including "Slow Ride" (1975) and "I Just Want to Make Love to You." The band produced multiple gold and platinum albums, including Fool for the City (1975) and Foghat Live (1977).
Peverett was known by the stage name "Lonesome Dave," a persona derived from an imaginary childhood playmate he called "Junior Foghat." He continued performing and recording with Foghat through various line-up changes until his death from kidney cancer on 7 February 2000 in Orlando, Florida, at the age of 56.
As a surname, "Peverett" is of English origin and is relatively uncommon. Beyond Dave Peverett, the name also appears in contemporary contexts such as Peverett Property Group, a property development and investment firm.
