The town lies in the Hausruckviertel region, roughly 30 km west of the regional capital Linz and 12 km east of the district center Grieskirchen.

Throughout the Middle Ages the settlement developed around a parish church and a market square, attaining market rights in the 16th century under the Habsburg monarchy.
