Definition
Petrove Raion was an administrative district (raion) of Kirovohrad Oblast in central Ukraine. Its administrative centre was the urban‑type settlement of Petrove. The raion existed as a territorial unit of Ukraine until the administrative reform of July 2020, when it was merged into Oleksandriia Raion.
Overview
- Country: Ukraine
- Oblast: Kirovohrad Oblast
- Established: 1923 (as part of the Soviet‑era territorial organization)
- Abolished: 18 July 2020, pursuant to the nationwide reform that reduced the number of raions in Kirovohrad Oblast from 21 to 4.
- Administrative centre: Petrove (urban‑type settlement)
- Area: Approximately 790 km² (various sources give slightly different figures).
- Population: Estimated 28 000–30 000 inhabitants (2020 estimate).
- Subdivisions (pre‑2020): The raion comprised one settlement council (Petrove), multiple village councils, and a total of about 40‑45 villages and rural settlements.
The territory was predominantly agricultural, with a landscape of steppe and forest‑steppe soils. Major economic activities included crop farming (wheat, barley, corn), livestock breeding, and small‑scale food processing. Road networks connected Petrove with the regional centre, Kirovohrad, and neighboring raions.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Petrove” derives from the personal name Petro (Ukrainian form of Peter). The suffix “‑ove” is a common Ukrainian toponymic ending indicating possession or association, thus “Petrove” can be interpreted as “the place of Petro”. The raion adopted the name of its administrative centre.
