Petronėlė Lastienė

Petronėlė Lastienė (née Sirutytė; April 18, 1897 – February 12, 1993) was a prominent Lithuanian historian, museologist, pedagogue, and publicist. She is recognized for her significant contributions to Lithuanian historiography, particularly in the interwar period, and for her resilience in continuing scholarly work after suffering Soviet repression.

Early Life and Education

Born Petronėlė Sirutytė on April 18, 1897, in Linkuva, Russian Empire (now Lithuania), she received her early education in her native country. She pursued higher education at the University of Lithuania (later renamed [[Vytautas Magnus University]]) in Kaunas, where she specialized in history and graduated in 1928.

Career and Contributions

Following her graduation, Lastienė embarked on a diverse career that encompassed archival work, museology, and education. She worked at the State Central Archive (now the [[Lithuanian State Historical Archives]]) and, starting in 1929, served at the [[Vytautas the Great War Museum]] (now the Kaunas City Museum). At the museum, she was a dedicated curator of the Historical Section and also managed the institution's library. Simultaneously, she contributed to education by teaching history at various gymnasiums (secondary schools) in Kaunas. Her academic work primarily focused on Lithuanian history, with a particular interest in the 16th to 18th centuries. She authored numerous scholarly articles and studies throughout her career, making her one of the few professional female historians in early 20th-century Lithuania.

Soviet Repression and Later Life

Lastienė's career was tragically interrupted by the Soviet occupation of Lithuania. In 1946, she was arrested by Soviet authorities and subsequently deported to Siberia, specifically to Krasnoyarsk Krai. After a decade in exile, she was allowed to return to Lithuania in 1956. Despite the hardships and the political climate, she continued her historical research and writing, working at the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. Petronėlė Lastienė passed away on February 12, 1993, in Vilnius, in newly independent Lithuania.

Legacy

Petronėlė Lastienė is remembered as a pioneering female historian in Lithuania and a dedicated preserver of Lithuanian cultural heritage through her museological and archival work. Her unwavering commitment to scholarship and her resilience in continuing her intellectual pursuits despite political persecution serve as an enduring inspiration for future generations of historians and cultural workers.
