Definition
Petrobrazi Refinery is an oil‑refining complex situated in the commune of Petrobrazi, near the city of Ploiești in Prahova County, Romania. It processes crude petroleum into a range of fuels and petrochemical feedstocks.
Overview
The refinery was constructed during the late‑1960s and early‑1970s as part of Romania’s state‑planned expansion of its oil‑processing capacity. Commercial operations began in the mid‑1970s. Originally owned by the state‑run oil company Petrom, the facility became part of OMV Petrom after the Austrian energy group OMV acquired a majority stake in Petrom in 2004.
Petrobrazi Refinery is one of Romania’s principal refining installations, complementing other domestic plants such as the Astra Oil Refinery in Ploiești and the Deva Refinery. The complex supplies a significant share of the nation’s gasoline, diesel, heating oil, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and various petrochemical intermediates.
Etymology/Origin
The name “Petrobrazi” combines the Greek‑derived prefix petro‑ (relating to petroleum) with the local toponym Braz/Brazi. “Brazi” is a Romanian word meaning “fir trees” and is also the name of the nearby village that historically featured fir‑tree forests. Hence, “Petrobrazi” denotes the petroleum facility located in the Brazi area.
