Peter Unwin

Peter Unwin (1934 – 2017) was a British diplomat and author. His career in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office spanned over three decades, during which he served in various capacities across the globe. After retiring from diplomatic service, Unwin became a prolific writer, publishing numerous books primarily on history, international relations, and biography.

Early Life and Education

Born in 1934, Peter Unwin received his education at Winchester College and New College, Oxford, where he read Modern History.

Diplomatic Career

Unwin joined the Foreign Service in 1957. His early postings included roles in Helsinki, Paris, and Budapest. He also served in the Central African Republic and Moscow. His career culminated in two ambassadorial appointments:

  • Ambassador to Denmark: 1983–1986
  • Ambassador to Hungary: 1986–1989

Throughout his diplomatic career, Unwin gained extensive experience in European affairs and the complexities of the Cold War era.

Writing Career

Following his retirement from the diplomatic service in 1989, Peter Unwin embarked on a successful career as an author. His writings often drew upon his deep knowledge of history and international affairs, exploring topics ranging from medieval England to the origins of the Cold War, and biographical studies of influential figures.
