Political Career
Governor of Anambra State
Obi's political journey gained prominence with his governorship of Anambra State. His path to the governorship was marked by legal battles and judicial pronouncements.
- First Term (2006-2007): He was declared winner of the 2003 governorship election by the Court of Appeal in March 2006, three years after the election, thereby unseating the incumbent, Chris Ngige. He was impeached in November 2006 but was reinstated by the Supreme Court in February 2007, making him the first governor in Nigeria to be impeached and reinstated.
- Second Term (2007): He left office in May 2007 after a fresh election was conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which brought in Andy Uba. However, the Supreme Court again ruled that Obi's four-year term began in March 2006, nullifying Uba's election and returning Obi to office in June 2007.
- Third Term (2010-2014): Obi successfully contested and won re-election for a second full term in February 2010, which concluded in March 2014.
As governor, Obi was known for his focus on prudent financial management, debt reduction, infrastructure development, and improvements in education and healthcare. His administration was credited with significant savings for the state and improved its standing in national examinations.
Vice Presidential Candidacy (2019)
In 2019, Peter Obi was selected as the running mate to Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The ticket came second to the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
Presidential Candidacy (2023)
In the lead-up to the 2023 general election, Peter Obi initially declared his intention to run for president under the PDP platform. However, he later withdrew from the PDP presidential primary and defected to the Labour Party in May 2022, becoming its presidential candidate. His campaign gained significant traction, particularly among younger Nigerians, advocating for a shift from consumption to production, fighting corruption, and improving the economy. His supporters were often referred to as "Obidients." He ultimately came third in the election, behind Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP.
Political Philosophy
Obi's political philosophy generally centers on:
- Fiscal responsibility and reduction of government waste.
- Emphasis on investment in human capital (education and health).
- Transition from a consumption-based economy to a production-based economy.
- Strong anti-corruption stance.
- Good governance and accountability.
