Peter Nilson (13 July 1937 – 21 January 1998) was a Swedish astronomer, mathematician, and author. He earned his doctorate in astronomy from Uppsala University, where his research focused on the structure and dynamics of galaxies. Nilson held positions at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics and later served as a lecturer at the same university, contributing to both academic research and public education in astronomy.
In addition to his scientific work, Nilson wrote a number of popular‑science books and science‑fiction novels that brought astronomical concepts to a broader audience. Notable titles include the popular science works Vägen till stjärnorna (“The Way to the Stars”, 1975) and Universums gåtor (“Mysteries of the Universe”, 1980), as well as the science‑fiction novels Människor på en annan planet (“People on Another Planet”, 1982) and Tidens gåtor (“Riddles of Time”, 1985). His writings are recognized for combining accurate scientific information with accessible narrative styles.
Nilson received several Swedish awards for his contributions to science communication, and his legacy includes both his academic publications on galactic structure and his influence on public interest in astronomy through his literary works. He passed away in 1998 in his native Sweden.
