Peter Adam (1929–2019) was a German-born British documentary filmmaker, television producer, and author. He is best known for his long-standing career at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), where he produced and directed numerous programs focused on art, literature, and 20th-century cultural history.
Born in Berlin, Adam moved to the United Kingdom in the late 1940s. He joined the BBC in the 1950s and became a central figure in the corporation’s arts department. During his tenure, he worked on influential series such as Monitor, Review, and Arena. His filmography includes documentaries on significant cultural figures, including Jean Cocteau, Luchino Visconti, David Hockney, Georg Baselitz, and the architect Eileen Gray. Adam was noted for his ability to secure interviews with often-reclusive subjects and for his sophisticated editorial style.
In addition to his film work, Adam was a published author. His most prominent literary contribution is Art of the Third Reich (1992), a two-volume study (and accompanying television series) that analyzed the aesthetic and cultural policies of Nazi Germany. He also wrote a definitive biography of the designer Eileen Gray and an autobiography titled Not Drowning But Waving (1995), which detailed his experiences as an expatriate in Britain and his career in public broadcasting.
Adam’s work is characterized by a commitment to European modernism and a scholarly approach to television as a medium for art education. He received several awards for his contributions to the arts, including being named a Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government. He died in London in 2019.
