Description
Peristernia venusta is a marine gastropod mollusk characterized by an elongated, fusiform shell. Adult shells typically reach lengths of 25–35 mm, though size may vary among populations. The shell possesses a high spire with several convex whorls and a moderately long siphonal canal. Ornamentation includes fine axial ribs and subtle spiral cords, giving the surface a lightly textured appearance. The aperture is ovate, and the outer lip is thin but reinforced internally. The coloration is generally creamy to light brown, often with faint darker axial streaks or bands, contributing to its epithet “venusta,” meaning “charming” or “beautiful” in Latin.
Distribution and Habitat
Peristernia venusta occurs in the tropical Indo‑Western Pacific region. Documented localities include the coastal waters of the Philippines, Indonesia, and the broader Coral Triangle. The species inhabits subtidal zones, typically found on sandy or muddy substrates at depths ranging from 10 m to 60 m, where it can burrow or reside among detritus.
Ecology
Members of the family Fasciolariidae are predatory or scavenging gastropods. While specific feeding observations for P. venusta are limited, it is presumed to prey upon or scavenge small invertebrates such as bivalves or polychaete worms, consistent with the trophic habits of related species.
Reproductive Biology
Like other fasciolariids, P. venusta is expected to be gonochoric (separate sexes) and to release eggs encased in gelatinous ribbons that develop into planktonic veliger larvae. Detailed reproductive studies for this species have not been published.
Conservation Status
There are no assessments of Peristernia venusta on the IUCN Red List. No specific threats have been identified, and the species is not known to be of commercial importance.
