Pepeng Agimat (lit. 'Pepe the Amulet'), also known as Agimat: Ang Mga Alamat ni Ramon Revilla presents Pepeng Agimat, is a Philippine television drama fantasy series broadcast by ABS-CBN. It is the second installment of the anthology series Agimat: Ang Mga Alamat ni Ramon Revilla. The series is based on the 1973 Philippine film Pepeng Agimat...Sa Daigdig ng Kababalaghan directed by Tony Cayado. It was directed by Dondon S. Santos and starred Jolo Revilla in the title role, alongside Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr. The series aired on ABS-CBN's Yes Weekend! lineup from November 14, 2009 to February 27, 2010, replacing Tiagong Akyat and was succeeded by Tonyong Bayawak.

Overview

1973 Film

The television series is an adaptation of the 1973 film Pepeng Agimat...Sa Daigdig ng Kababalaghan ("Pepe the Amulet...in the World of Mystery"), which starred Ramon Revilla Sr. as the title role. The film also featured Gloria Romero, Rosemarie Gil, and Bella Flores, and was directed by Tony Cayado.

1999 Film

The 1973 film was remade in 1999, starring Bong Revilla (son of the original lead actor Ramon Revilla Sr.), who also made a cameo appearance as Apo Damon. The cast included Princess Punzalan, Jess Lapid Jr., Al Tantay, Vanessa del Bianco, LJ Moreno, Dennis Padilla, King Gutierrez, and Jolo Revilla, who would later take the title role in the television adaptation.

Synopsis

The series follows Felipe "Pepe" Dimaanta Jr. (Jolo Revilla), a geeky and clumsy high school student who is bullied by his peers. Pepe discovers that he has inherited a mission from his father: to use a magical amulet (agimat) to vanquish a clan of aswang (mythical shape-shifting monsters in Filipino folklore) that is terrorizing the province of Cavite. As he embraces his destiny, Pepe falls for a mysterious woman named Lora Hizon (Melissa Ricks), forcing him to choose between his mission and his love for her.

Production

The series was developed by Julie Anne R. Benitez and Roldeo T. Endrinal, with writing by Philip King and Dindo Perez. It was produced by Dreamscape Entertainment Television, with Arnel T. Nacario serving as executive producer and David Siat as cinematographer. The series consisted of 17 episodes, each with a running time of approximately 45 minutes.

Broadcast

Pepeng Agimat aired on ABS-CBN from November 14, 2009 to February 27, 2010, as part of the network's Yes Weekend! programming block. It was the second installment in the Agimat: Ang Mga Alamat ni Ramon Revilla anthology series.

Award

The series won the 2010 PMPC Star Awards for Television's "Best Horror/Fantasy Program."
