The Penrith Panthers are an Australian professional rugby league football club based in Penrith, New South Wales, Australia. They compete in the National Rugby League (NRL), the premier rugby league competition in Australia and New Zealand.
History
The Penrith Panthers Rugby League Club was founded in 1966 and entered the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL) competition, the precursor to the NRL, in 1967. The club initially struggled to find consistent success, often finishing in the lower half of the ladder during its early decades. The Panthers' fortunes began to change in the late 1980s. The club made its first Grand Final appearance in 1990, losing to the Canberra Raiders. However, they returned the following year, winning their inaugural premiership in 1991, defeating the Canberra Raiders in a memorable Grand Final.
After the 1991 triumph, the club experienced a period of mixed results, including a lean spell in the mid-to-late 1990s and early 2000s. Their second premiership victory came in 2003, when they defied expectations to defeat the Sydney Roosters in the Grand Final.
The 2010s saw a resurgence for the Panthers, culminating in a period of sustained dominance in the early 2020s. Under coach Ivan Cleary and a core group of local juniors, the club secured three consecutive premierships in 2021, 2022, and 2023, establishing themselves as one of the most successful teams in the modern era of the NRL.
