Pelionella is a genus of scale insects belonging to the family Pseudococcidae, commonly known as mealybugs, within the order Hemiptera (suborder Sternorrhyncha).
Taxonomy
- Kingdom: Animalia
- Phylum: Arthropoda
- Class: Insecta
- Order: Hemiptera
- Suborder: Sternorrhyncha
- Superfamily: Coccoidea
- Family: Pseudococcidae
- Genus: Pelionella
The genus was erected by entomologist D. R. Williams in 1978 (Williams, 1978).
Description
Members of Pelionella are typical mealybugs, possessing a soft, wax‑covered body that can appear powdery or cottony. Like other pseudococcids, they feed on plant sap using piercing‑sucking mouthparts. Diagnostic morphological features used to separate Pelionella from related genera include the arrangement and shape of dorsal wax filaments, the structure of the anal ring, and the presence of specific types of multilocular pores, as detailed in taxonomic keys for Pseudococcidae.
Distribution and Habitat
Species of Pelionella have been recorded primarily in tropical and subtropical regions. Reported occurrences include parts of Africa, Asia, and Oceania, where the insects inhabit a variety of host plants, often on foliage, stems, or roots.
Species
The genus comprises several described species; the exact number is subject to ongoing taxonomic revision. Notable species that have appeared in the scientific literature include:
- Pelionella alstonensis
- Pelionella papuae
(These species listings reflect the current state of published taxonomic work as of 2024.)
Economic and Ecological Significance
As with many mealybugs, certain Pelionella species can become pests on cultivated plants, feeding on phloem sap and potentially transmitting plant pathogens. However, the economic impact of the genus as a whole is considered limited relative to more widespread mealybug genera.
