Peetri (river)

The Peetri River (Estonian: Peetri jõgi) is a river in southern Estonia. It is a significant right-bank tributary of the Väike Emajõgi river, which in turn flows into Lake Võrtsjärv.

Geography

  • Source: The Peetri River originates in the Valga County, near the village of Peetri in the Otepää Parish. Its headwaters are situated in the Otepää Upland, an area characterized by rolling hills and small lakes.
  • Course: The river generally flows in a southwesterly direction, meandering through agricultural lands and forested areas within Valga County.
  • Mouth: It empties into the Väike Emajõgi River approximately 10 km upstream from Lake Võrtsjärv.
  • Length: The Peetri River has a total length of approximately 62 kilometers (39 miles).
  • Basin Area: Its drainage basin covers an area of about 411 square kilometers (159 square miles).
  • Tributaries: Key tributaries include the Aheru, Loo, and Õru streams.

Hydrology and Ecology The Peetri River is part of the larger Narva River basin, as its waters eventually flow from Lake Võrtsjärv via the Emajõgi River into Lake Peipus, and then via the Narva River into the Gulf of Finland. The river is a typical Estonian lowland river, characterized by relatively slow flow and a diverse riparian ecosystem. Its waters support various fish species, and its banks provide habitat for local wildlife.

Settlements While the river does not flow through any major towns, several smaller villages and rural settlements are located along its course, giving it local importance for irrigation and recreation.

Etymology The name "Peetri" is a common Estonian personal name, equivalent to "Peter" in English. It is likely that the river or a nearby settlement was named after an individual or a patron saint, a common practice in Estonian toponymy.
