José Pedro Cea Urriza (1 September 1900 – 18 September 1970), known as Pedro Cea, was a Uruguayan professional football player who played as a striker, and later a coach. He is best known for being Uruguay's leading goalscorer in the 1930 FIFA World Cup, which Uruguay won on home soil.
Early Life and Club Career
Born in Redondela, Spain, Cea moved to Uruguay at a young age. He began his club career with Central Atlético Lito in 1922, later playing for Bella Vista (1928) and spending the majority of his career at Nacional (1929–1934), where he won the Uruguayan Primera División titles in 1933 and 1934, as well as the Torneo Competencia in 1934.
International Career
Cea debuted for the Uruguay national team in 1923 and went on to earn 26 caps, scoring 13 goals. He was part of the Uruguay squads that won the South American Championship (now Copa América) in 1923 and 1924. At the Olympic Games, Cea won gold medals with Uruguay in 1924 (Paris) and 1928 (Amsterdam).
At the inaugural 1930 FIFA World Cup, Cea scored five goals in four matches. He scored a hat-trick in the semi-final against Yugoslavia and netted the equalizing goal in the final against Argentina, which Uruguay won 4–2. He was awarded the Silver Boot as the tournament's second-highest goalscorer. He played his last international match in 1932.
Managerial Career
Cea later managed the Uruguay national team from 1941 to 1942, leading the side to victory in the 1942 South American Championship.
Death
Cea died on 18 September 1970 in Montevideo, Uruguay, at the age of 70.
