Patron (horse)

Patron was an Australian‑bred Thoroughbred racehorse, foaled in 1890, best known for winning the 1894 Melbourne Cup. Bred in Australia, he was a chestnut stallion sired by Grand Flaneur (by Yattendon) out of the mare Olga, whose sire was Piscator. Patron was owned by F. W. Purches and trained by Richard Bradfield.

  • Melbourne Cup (1894) – entered at odds of 33/1; won by three‑quarters of a length, with his full brother Ruenalf finishing unplaced. No trophy was awarded that year due to an economic depression in Australia.

In 1897 Patron was sold to an English client of the International Horse Agency and exported to London. His pedigree shows inbreeding 4S × 4D × 4D to the stallion Stockwell, meaning Stockwell appears once in the fourth generation on the sire’s side and twice in the fourth generation on the dam’s side.

Patron’s career contributed to the early prestige of Australian Thoroughbreds in international racing circles.
