Pat Delany (basketball)

Pat Delany is an American professional basketball coach who serves as the lead assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He has held various coaching positions across multiple NBA franchises throughout his career.

Early life and playing career

Delany was raised in Avon-by-the-Sea, New Jersey, and attended Christian Brothers Academy for prep basketball. Standing 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 185 pounds, he played as a guard for the Saint Anselm Hawks men's basketball team in NCAA Division II. Over his college career, Delany played 118 games, starting in 58 of them. He averaged 3.7 points per game with a shooting percentage of 41.5% and recorded 731 assists. He earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Saint Anselm College.

Coaching career

Delany began his NBA career in 2001–2002 as a video intern with the Boston Celtics. He subsequently joined the Miami Heat, where he worked as a video intern from 2002 to 2003, was promoted to video coordinator from 2003 to 2007, and advanced to the role of advance scout from 2007 to 2013.

In the 2013–2014 season, Delany was named head coach of the Sioux Falls Skyforce, leading the team to a 31–19 record and a postseason appearance that reached the semi-finals.

He then served as an assistant coach for the Charlotte Hornets from 2014 to April 2018, followed by a tenure with the Orlando Magic as an assistant coach from June 2018 to 2021. In August 2021, he joined the Washington Wizards as lead assistant coach.

In 2023, Delany was hired as an assistant coach on the Toronto Raptors' staff under head coach Darko Rajaković. In October 2023, Rajaković announced that Delany would serve as the lead assistant coach and would be in charge of the team's defense. Delany also served as the Raptors' head coach at the 2023 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.
