Passerina (plant)

Passerina is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae, subfamily Asteroideae, and tribe Gnaphalieae. The genus is endemic to the Southern African region, primarily the Cape Floristic Province of South Africa. Species are typically evergreen shrubs or subshrubs that grow in fynbos habitats, ranging from coastal dunes to mountainous slopes.

Morphology
Members of Passerina typically possess:

  • Leaves: narrow, often linear to lanceolate, with a silvery tomentose (hairy) surface that reduces water loss.
  • Inflorescences: compact capitula (flower heads) arranged in terminal or axillary cymes. The involucral bracts are usually papery and may be brightly colored.
  • Flowers: bisexual, with tubular corollas; florets are ligulate (ray) or disc-shaped depending on the species.
  • Fruit: a cypsela (achenes) equipped with a pappus of fine hairs that aid in wind dispersal.

Distribution and Habitat
Passerina species are confined to the Cape Floristic Region, an area renowned for its high plant endemism and biodiversity. They thrive in nutrient‑poor, sandy soils and are adapted to the region’s Mediterranean climate—wet winters and dry, fire‑prone summers. Many species display fire‑stimulated flowering, a common trait among fynbos flora.

Ecology
The flowers attract a variety of pollinators, including bees, flies, and beetles. Their seed dispersal mechanism relies on wind, facilitated by the pappus. Some species have been observed to form dense thickets that provide shelter for small invertebrates.
