Parvulastra

Definition
Parvulastra is a genus of small sea stars (class Asteroidea) belonging to the family Asterinidae. Members of this genus are marine echinoderms characterized by a generally pentagonal body plan and a reduced number of arms compared with many other starfish.

Overview
Parvulastra species are distributed in temperate coastal waters of the Southern Hemisphere, notably around southern Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. The genus comprises several recognized species, including Parvulastra exigua, Parvulastra regularis, and Parvulastra parvivermis. These sea stars inhabit shallow intertidal zones, often found under rocks, within tide pools, and on low‑lying algae. Their ecological role includes grazing on microalgae and biofilm, contributing to the regulation of microbial communities on rocky substrates.

Etymology / Origin
The name Parvulastra derives from Latin roots: parvulus meaning “small” and astra meaning “star”. The combination reflects the genus’s distinguishing feature of diminutive size relative to many other asteroids.

Characteristics

  • Size: Individuals typically range from 10 mm to 30 mm in diameter when fully expanded.
  • Morphology: The body is generally pentagonal with five short, broad arms that may be slightly rounded at the tips. The dorsal surface bears a thin covering of ossicles and often exhibits fine granulation or subtle coloration patterns that provide camouflage against rocky substrates.
  • Skeleton: Like other asterinids, Parvulastra possesses a flexible endoskeleton composed of calcareous plates (ossicles) linked by collagenous ligaments, allowing the animal to conform to uneven surfaces.
  • Locomotion: Movement is achieved through coordinated action of tube feet, which are equipped with suction pads for adhesion.
  • Reproduction: Species within the genus are known to reproduce both sexually, by releasing gametes into the water column, and asexually, via fissiparity (splitting of the disc) in some cases, though the prevalence of each mode varies among species.
  • Feeding: They are primarily micrograzers, ingesting diatoms, cyanobacteria, and detritus using their ambulacral grooves and eversible stomachs.
