History

  • Early Settlement (1830s‑1850s): The area that would become Parnell was first settled by European‑American pioneers in the 1830s, many of whom were of New England and German origin. The fertile soil and access to nearby Lake Michigan made the region attractive for farming.
  • Town Formation (1852): The Town of Parnell was officially organized in 1852, named after Irish nationalist leader Charles Stewart Parnell, reflecting the influence of Irish immigrants in the region.
  • Railroad Era (1860s‑1890s): The Chicago and North Western Railway established a line through the town, spurring modest growth in the late 19th century. A small depot and accompanying grain elevators were built near what is now the Parnell community.
  • 20th‑Century Development: Agricultural production remained the economic backbone throughout the 20th century. Post‑World War II suburban expansion from nearby Kenosha and Racine gradually increased residential development, though the town retained a largely agrarian character.
  • Recent Trends (2000s‑present): The town has seen a slow but steady rise in population as families seek a rural lifestyle within commuting distance of larger urban centers. Efforts to preserve open space and farmland have been a focus of local governance.
