- Parexocoetus hillianus is a small to medium‑sized flying fish. Like other exocoetids, it possesses elongated pectoral fins that enable brief gliding above the water surface. The species is characterized by a relatively slender body, a forked caudal fin, and a lower jaw that is slightly protruding. Scale counts, fin ray numbers, and measurements of body proportions are used to differentiate it from congeners such as P. brachypterus.
Distribution and habitat
- The species is recorded from tropical and subtropical marine waters of the Atlantic Ocean, with occurrences reported off the coasts of West Africa, the Caribbean, and the western Atlantic. It inhabits the epipelagic zone, typically near the surface where it can exploit its gliding ability to escape predators.
Biology and ecology
