Paratrophis banksii

Paratrophis banksii is a species of flowering plant in the family Moraceae. It is native to New Zealand and is commonly known as “Banks’ hange.” The species has been treated under the synonym Streblus banksii in contemporary taxonomic references.

Taxonomy

  • Kingdom: Plantae
  • Clade: Angiosperms
  • Clade: Eudicots
  • Order: Rosales
  • Family: Moraceae
  • Genus: Paratrophis (sometimes placed in Streblus)
  • Species: P. banksii

Nomenclature
The specific epithet banksii honors the British botanist Sir Joseph Banks, who collected plant specimens in New Zealand during the late 18th century.

Description
Paratrophis banksii is a small to medium‑sized evergreen tree, typically reaching heights of 5–12 m. The bark is smooth to slightly fissured, and the leaves are alternate, simple, and elliptic to oblong, measuring 5–12 cm in length. Leaves are dark green above, lighter beneath, and have a finely serrated margin. The species produces inconspicuous, unisexual flowers arranged in dense inflorescences (axillary or terminal). Fruit are small drupes that mature to a dark purple or black color.

Distribution and Habitat
The species is endemic to New Zealand, occurring on both the North and South Islands. It is commonly found in coastal and lowland forest, riverine corridors, and forest margins, often favoring well‑drained, fertile soils.

Ecology
The fruits are consumed by native birds, which act as dispersal agents for the seeds. The tree contributes to forest structure and provides habitat for various invertebrates.

Conservation Status
Paratrophis banksii is not listed as threatened on the New Zealand Threat Classification System and is considered relatively common within its suitable habitats.

Uses
The wood is light and has been used locally for small implements and carving. The species has limited ornamental use due to its modest size and attractive foliage.
