Parapoynx crisonalis

Parapoynx crisonalis is a species of moth in the family Crambidae, subfamily Acentropinae. It was first described by Francis Walker in 1859.

Taxonomy

  • Kingdom: Animalia
  • Phylum: Arthropoda
  • Class: Insecta
  • Order: Lepidoptera
  • Family: Crambidae
  • Subfamily: Acentropinae
  • Genus: Parapoynx
  • Species: Parapoynx crisonalis

The original description named the species Nymphula crisonalis; it was later transferred to the genus Parapoynx.

Description

Adult individuals have a wingspan of approximately 18–22 mm. The forewings are typically brownish‑gray with variable darker markings and a series of fine, wavy lines. Hindwings are paler, often exhibiting a faint discal spot. Detailed morphological characteristics, such as genitalia structure, are used to differentiate P. crisonalis from closely related species within the genus.

Distribution and Habitat

Parapoynx crisonalis is recorded from a broad region of the Indo‑Australasian realm, including:

  • South and Southeast Asia: India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia
  • East Asia: Southern China and Japan
  • Oceania: Northern Australia (Queensland)

The species inhabits freshwater environments where aquatic host plants are present. Adults are typically encountered near ponds, lakes, and slow‑moving streams.

Biology and Ecology

Larvae of P. crisonalis are aquatic and feed on a variety of submerged or emergent aquatic plants. They construct portable cases from plant material and silk, within which they live and feed. The life cycle includes complete metamorphosis: egg → aquatic larva → pupa (typically attached to vegetation near the water's surface) → adult. Adults are nocturnal and are attracted to light sources.

Economic and Ecological Significance

There is no documented evidence that Parapoynx crisonalis causes significant agricultural or economic impact. Its role in freshwater ecosystems is primarily as a herbivore of aquatic vegetation and as prey for fish and other insectivorous organisms.
